2015/2016 Student Orientation Program – Dean’s Welcome Speech

Student Affairs Division of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, has asked me to welcome you all to the 2015/ 2016 orientation programme for the newly admitted students. This university has continuously been rated very high in academic depth, spread, and output as well as other areas of student-related activities. That explains why our students have won laurels in the areas of sports, academics, and other endeavors.

The behaviours of our students are collectively molded by the deliberate interventions of the university management, members of staff (academics and non-academics) and the host community (Akungba-Akoko). The interventions of these individuals and groups are a reflection of Yoruba position on child upbringing, which opines that Oju merin lo’ n bi’ mo; igba oju lo n wo.

In Adekunle Ajasin University, we adopt the igba oju mechanism to monitor, guide, and train our students because it is believed that at the point of admission into this university, students would have left a relatively familiar, safe and secure home environment for a relatively new and challenging environment (the university). Against this background, the Student Affairs Division, with the support of the University, has instituted many student-support services; and continuously organized workshops and seminars on safety, security, and psychological well-being in order to enable our students cope more effectively with this new and challenging environment...Read more

2015/2016 Student Orientation Program – Student Affairs Division: Heartbeat of the University

Students constitute the critical target group and the essence of the establishment of any university. The mission and all the activities that are designed to drive the vision of the university revolve around the students. Student Affairs Division is, therefore, at the nerve centre of the University system in the management and administration of students’ welfare support services and discipline. Against this background, the Student Affairs Division has become as important as the heart is to the body in providing these support services in order to improve the learning environment and to enhance the psychological wellness and functionality of the learner. In spite of the paucity of funds, the university management has consistently provided financial and logistics supports to ensuring a strong and virile Student Affairs Division. We sincerely appreciate the Vice chancellor and his management team for the wonderful support.

In order to promote the efficient and effective management of the students’ support services, the Student Affairs Division is divided into three specialized operational units. The specialized units of the Student Affairs Division include:

  • General Administration Unit,
  • Counseling and Human Development Unit; and
  • Halls of Residence Administration Unit.

Apart from the listed units, the Division is working on the possibility of establishing an off-campus unit. This specialized unit, if established would handle all issues relating to the management of the challenges and behaviours of students who live off-campus. Presently, about 5.4% (757 bed spaces) of the 14,000 students of this university live on-campus. Therefore, the establishment of this unit is imperative in order to urgently arrest the ugly incidences perpetrated or witnessed by students living off-campus...Read more
